About Muaythai

Muaythai is a combat ring sport, self-defence system and cultural art form. It is the national sport of Thailand.

Muay Thai (Thai: มวยไทย, RTGS: muai thai, pronounced [mūa̯j tʰāj] ( About this soundlisten)), sometimes referred to as "Thai boxing", is a martial art and combat sport that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques.

This discipline is known as the "art of eight limbs" as it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins.

Muay Thai became widespread internationally in the late-20th to 21st century, when Westernized practitioners from Thailand began competing in kickboxing and mixed-rules matches as well as matches under muay Thai rules around the world. The professional league is governed by The Professional Boxing Association of Thailand (P.A.T), sanctioned by The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT).

Muaythai is regarded by many as the most effective stand up striking system, practitioners use a variety of techniques including:

Stand up grappling, also known as the clinch, which includes throws and sweep techniques. There is also a self-defence part of Muaythai, not used in the ring called Muay Boran. This incorporates locks, holds, chokes, and throws otherwise not legal in the ring sport of Muaythai.
